Veteran judge Steve Weisfeld from New Jersey is expected to replace Miami’s Fernando Barbosa for today's Oleksandr Usyk-Tyson Fury rematch in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The decision, though not finalized by Friday morning’s rules meeting, seems imminent after Barbosa withdrew due to illness.
Weisfeld brings extensive experience to the role, having judged notable bouts involving both fighters. He had Tyson Fury ahead in his rematch and trilogy wins against Deontay Wilder and scored Oleksandr Usyk as a 116-112 victor in his first encounter with Anthony Joshua. His familiarity with both champions makes him a natural choice to step in for Barbosa.
Barbosa, who also works for Disney and ESPN - the broadcaster aligned with Fury’s U.S. promoter Top Rank - was originally slated to serve as one of the three judges but was sidelined by health concerns. Weisfeld is reportedly one of two potential replacements considered by organizers.
The rematch will also feature Puerto Rico’s Roberto Ramirez Jr. as referee, with Gerardo Martinez, also from Puerto Rico, and Chicago’s Pat Morley rounding out the judging panel.
