Former light heavyweight contender Vyacheslav Uzelkov has tragically passed away at the age of 45 due to heart complications. The Ukrainian boxer leaves behind a legacy that resonated both in the amateur and professional ranks.

Uzelkov’s career was marked by significant achievements, starting with a bronze medal at the 2001 World Championships and a silver at the European Championships before turning pro in 2004. He quickly made a name for himself, amassing an impressive 20-0 record and capturing the WBA Intercontinental title, which he held for three years. His biggest challenge came in July 2010, when he faced WBA champion Beibut Shumenov in California. Despite a valiant effort, Uzelkov lost a hard-fought unanimous decision.

In 2012, Uzelkov battled Eduard Gutknecht for the EBU title, but fell short on the scorecards. He continued to compete at a high level, winning and later losing the WBO Intercontinental title. He retired in 2014 with a record of 30-4 (19 KOs) after a surprising defeat to Geard Ajetovic. Throughout his career, he shared the ring with notable names like Jaidon Codrington, Julio Cesar Dominguez, and Gabriel Campillo.

The Ukrainian Boxing Federation expressed deep condolences, stating, ”Ukrainian boxing has suffered a heavy loss - Vyacheslav Uzelkov has passed away. His name will forever remain in the history of sports, and his example of strength, resilience, and dedication will inspire future generations.”
