Devin Haney is reportedly negotiating a fight against WBO light welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez at 140 pounds. This matchup comes as a surprise, especially considering the aftermath of Haney’s last bout against Ryan Garcia, where he suffered a brutal three-knockdown defeat in April. Taking on a heavy-hitter like Teofimo, without a tune-up fight, has many questioning whether Haney is setting himself up for a quick cash-out before bowing out of the sport.

While a Haney vs. Lopez clash would generate pay-per-view interest, it’s unlikely to match the numbers Haney pulled in his showdown with Garcia. Teofimo’s recent performances have been inconsistent, leaving him far from the PPV draw status that Haney’s previous opponent carried. Yet, Lopez still possesses power, and that’s not something Haney needs after the punishment he endured earlier this year.

According to reports from Forbes, sources indicate that discussions are underway for the Haney-Teofimo fight to be broadcast on ESPN under the Top Rank banner. However, the risk is enormous for Haney, who is only 25 and still in the early stages of his career. Facing a rejuvenated Teofimo could lead to a quick end if the Brooklyn native brings his A-game. Many believe Haney should be focusing on rebuilding his confidence with a lighter opponent, rather than diving headfirst into the deep end.

Teofimo Lopez, on the other hand, hasn’t been at his best in recent outings against fighters like Sandor Martin, Jamaine Ortiz, and Pedro Campa. But if “vintage” Teofimo shows up, Haney could be in serious trouble. Promoter Eddie Hearn reportedly advised Haney to consider a tune-up bout before risking it all against someone as unpredictable as Lopez. Yet, it seems Haney is determined to take the fastest route to redemption, even if it means putting his career on the line.

While nothing has been officially confirmed yet, this fight could either be a bold statement from Haney, proving he’s still one of the best, or it could signal the end of his championship aspirations if Teofimo's power proves too much.
