Showtime Sports has made a startling announcement: they’ll be discontinuing their boxing coverage by the end of 2023, following Paramount Global’s decision. This news follows in the footsteps of HBO, which previously opted out of boxing broadcasts, leaving fans with fewer viewing choices. Now, enthusiasts are largely restricted to ESPN, DAZN, and potentially Amazon Prime.

The move to cut ties with boxing broadcasting points fingers at PBC for its consistent mismatches, which some fans believe have contributed to the channel's decline in the sport. Stephen Espinoza, Showtime Sports president, confirms boxing will remain on their platform until year-end, but his position will be terminated thereafter. PBC is now on the hunt for a new broadcast deal, with Amazon Prime and DAZN in the spotlight as potential suitors.

Historically, Showtime was a favorite among boxing fans, especially after HBO’s exit from the boxing scene. However, their recent content has been criticized, with elite fighters often on extended hiatuses and returning to fight undemanding opposition. The shift by Paramount to cease boxing broadcasts stems from the increasing emphasis on streaming services, suggesting boxing doesn’t pull the viewer numbers to justify its place.

Stephen Espinoza, addressing the Sport Business Journal, reflected, “While today’s news is disappointing, it’s a result of the evolving media landscape. The decision isn’t indicative of our recent efforts or our proud history, but the company’s strategic realignment in content offerings.
