Renowned boxing coach Shane McGuigan has once again been recognized as Trainer of the Year by the British Boxing Board of Control, in partnership with Boxing News. This marks the second occasion McGuigan has received this prestigious accolade, the first being in 2016. His success mirrors that of his father, Barry McGuigan, a boxing legend who was honored as Boxer of the Year in the mid-1980s.
Under McGuigan’s tutelage, a roster of elite fighters including WBO cruiserweight champion Chris Billam-Smith, rising star Caroline Dubois, European super lightweight champion Adam Azim, and IBF super bantamweight titleholder Ellie Scotney, have flourished. McGuigan’s coaching prowess has previously guided fighters such as Carl Frampton and Josh Taylor to Boxer of the Year awards, with Billam-Smith also receiving a nomination this year.
Reflecting on his stable's success, McGuigan highlighted the consistent results his team has achieved, underscoring the hard work and dedication behind their victories. Among his achievements, McGuigan has been instrumental in the career progress of light heavyweight contender Craig Richards, positioning him for potential world title opportunities.
Despite his already packed schedule, McGuigan remains open to new talent, expressing readiness to work with any highly skilled boxer eager to join his winning team. With 2024 promising numerous championship fights for his fighters, McGuigan is set to continue his influential role in shaping the future of boxing.
