Oscar De La Hoya has announced that Ryan Garcia is set to make a comeback on November 18th, potentially in Los Angeles. The opponent is yet to be finalized, but the focus is on ensuring the right match for Garcia, especially after his knockout loss to Gervonta Davis earlier this year. There's been speculation about Garcia taking on Ohara Davies for the WBA light welterweight title. Davies, currently ranked #1 WBA at 140, is seen more as a domestic-level British fighter. If Garcia struggles against Davies, it would raise questions about his ability to compete with the top fighters in the division.
De La Hoya, in conversation with Fight Hub TV, mentioned that while the venue and date are almost set, the opponent remains undecided. He emphasized the importance of matching Garcia with the right contender, especially considering his recent loss. Chris Algieri, commenting on the situation, pointed out that Garcia, despite his success and earnings, hasn’t faced many top-tier fighters. Algieri believes that if Garcia aims to compete with the best at 140, he needs to surpass fighters like Davies.
The potential matchup with Davies seems logical, especially with Rolly Romero, the current champion, sidelined due to an injury. Algieri further noted that while Garcia has achieved much, he’s never been a world champion. This fight could be his chance. However, Paulie Malignaggi raised concerns about Garcia getting a title shot right after a loss, questioning the consistency of boxing rules and decisions.
