According to reports from the Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory, two supplements listed on doping control forms submitted by star boxer Ryan Garcia before his victory over Devin Haney contained the banned substance ostarine. The doping control forms were submitted along with Garcia's urine sample collections on April 19 and 20, both of which returned adverse findings for ostarine.
Ostarine is a selective androgen receptor modulator that helps build muscle mass, enhance fat loss, and increase stamina and recovery ability. It has been on WADA's banned list since 2008.
The supplements in question are raspberry-lemonade flavored NutraBio SuperCarb and Body Health strawberry-flavored amino-acid blend. The presence of ostarine was found in both, with amounts ranging from 70-2200 picograms per gram powder in SuperCarb and 660-830 picograms in the amino-acid blend. Garcia had also listed other supplements including D3, iron, Thorne elite multivitamins, and magnesium glycinate.
Paul Greene, who has represented high-profile athletes in doping cases, is optimistic that the presence of ostarine in the supplements will lead to a reduced suspension for Garcia from the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC).
"The World Anti-Doping [Agency] code actually recognizes a declaration of a supplement in advance as proof that the athlete took it, and it allows an athlete to get a reduced sanction in most cases."
Victor Conte, a sports nutritionist and performance adviser for Haney, questioned the credibility of the test results. He pointed out that the supplements tested were from unsealed containers, raising the possibility of tampering. "The supplement test results simply cannot be authenticated because there is no chain of custody," Conte said.
Garcia, 25, maintains his innocence:
"I don't know what the f--- [ostarine] is. ... I have seriously no idea."
Despite his victory over Haney, Garcia was ineligible to win the WBC junior welterweight title after being 3.2 pounds overweight. Garcia's legal team is working to figure out the next steps, hoping for a light sanction.
