Ryan Garcia announced that he will face France’s Jaber Zayani in an exhibition match, marking his return to the ring following a one-year ban. The New York State Athletic Commission suspended Garcia after he tested positive for a banned substance in May, following his career-defining victory over Devin Haney. Garcia maintains his innocence, claiming the result was due to an Ashwagandha supplement, and has consistently stated he did not knowingly use performance-enhancing drugs.
As an exhibition, Garcia is legally allowed to participate despite his ban from official boxing. Zayani, a former sparring partner of Manny Pacquiao, is known for his impressive record and skill in the lightweight division.
This upcoming January bout won’t be Garcia’s usual fight; the exhibition will include a musical component, indicating Garcia’s intent to expand his brand, particularly in the Middle East, where entertainment and boxing are increasingly merging. Earlier this year, Garcia filmed a music video in Dubai, further hinting at his focus on reaching a global audience.
Garcia’s suspension will officially end in April, leaving fans wondering whether he’ll pursue a rematch with Devin Haney, a showdown with Teofimo Lopez, or a tune-up fight as he reintegrates into the sport. For now, this exhibition with Zayani is Garcia’s chance to stay in the spotlight and build his brand until he can return to sanctioned bouts.
