David Benavidez has officially announced on social media that his next fight will be against fellow super middleweight contender David Morrell. Both boxers are looking to make a statement, with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez remaining the only name ranked above them due to his reign as undisputed champion. After mildly underwhelming debuts at light heavyweight, both Benavidez and Morrell are returning to super middleweight with something to prove.
Benavidez, the 27-year-old unbeaten powerhouse from Phoenix, Arizona, now training in Seattle, confirmed the fight through Instagram. “There was a lot of names on the table, but I wanted to give my fans the best fight possible,” Benavidez wrote. “I reached out to David Morrell and his team to make this happen, and we got the contract done. This fight really is going to be a banger! Two of the best in the division and two titles on the line.”

Benavidez’s last fight was a 12-round unanimous decision win over former light heavyweight champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk in June. The bout was part of the Gervonta Davis-Frank Martin undercard, marking his only appearance in 2024. After unsuccessfully pursuing a fight with Canelo Alvarez at 168 pounds, Benavidez ventured up to light heavyweight but is now back to continue building his legacy at super middleweight.
David Morrell, a 26-year-old Cuban fighter trained by Ronnie Shields, last fought in August, winning a unanimous decision over Radivoje “Hot Rod” Kalajdzic. Known for his aggressive style, Morrell will look to continue his undefeated streak against one of the division’s most dangerous opponents. Though both fighters failed to score stoppages in their light heavyweight debuts, their styles promise a fan-friendly fight.
While the exact date and location are still to be confirmed, sources indicate that the bout will likely take place on either January 25 or February 1, headlining a pay-per-view event in Las Vegas.
