The World Boxing Council’s (WBC) latest heavyweight rankings have introduced a surprising yet contentious figure into the Top 10: Francis Ngannou. Despite not having a single win in professional boxing, Ngannou has been ranked 10th by the WBC, largely thanks to his unexpectedly competitive bout against WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. This fight, which marked Ngannou’s pro boxing debut, took place on October 28 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The new rankings feature Tyson Fury as the reigning champion, followed by a roster of prominent heavyweights: Deontay Wilder (1st), Anthony Joshua (2nd), Arslanbek Makhmudov (3rd), Frank Sanchez (4th), and others, with Ngannou securing the 10th spot. Ngannou’s inclusion has sparked debate among boxing enthusiasts. Some argue that his performance against Fury, though a loss, showcased his legitimacy as a heavyweight boxer and justified his ranking. Others, however, question the appropriateness of placing someone with an 0-1-0 record in such a high position.

The WBC’s statement asserts that Ngannou’s impressive showing against Fury warranted his entry into the Top 10. Now ranked, Ngannou is eligible to challenge for the WBC title, potentially setting up a rematch with Fury. However, with Fury scheduled for a unification showdown with Oleksandr Usyk on February 17, it remains to be seen if a rematch with Ngannou is on the cards.

This development is significant in Ngannou’s career, marking his transition from a UFC heavyweight champion to a recognized name in professional boxing. His entry into the WBC rankings, despite the lack of a boxing victory, emphasizes the impact of his performance against Fury and signals the potential for a new dynamic in the heavyweight division. Whether Ngannou’s ranking is justified remains a subject of debate, but his presence certainly adds an intriguing element to the heavyweight scene.
