Ahead of their highly anticipated super-middleweight title fight this Saturday night, Jaime Munguia, the younger and slightly larger fighter, weighed in slightly heavier than his opponent, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. The showdown is set for the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, coinciding with the Cinco de Mayo weekend celebrations. Alvarez, the 33-year-old defending champion, weighed in at 166.8 pounds, just under the 168-pound limit for the super-middleweight class, while Munguia tipped the scales at 167.4 pounds.
“I feel really good. I feel in my prime; I'm in the best shape of my life because I've got no injuries anymore. I'm so happy to be here. I want all of Mexico to enjoy this fight. It’s gonna be a great time, and most of all – viva Mexico. I’m gonna put on my best, using all of my experience and talent to win this fight,” said Canelo.
Munguia, 27, also voiced his excitement and confidence about the upcoming bout:
“I’m so excited. It’s a great opportunity. I’m going to take full advantage and I aim to be the new world champion by tomorrow. The energy you feel from me comes from the hard work in preparation, support from my team, my family, and all of you here cheering me on. It’s gonna be a great fight. Thank you to everyone who came out to support us, and most of all, viva Mexico.”
An interesting matchup on the Alvarez-Munguia undercard features Brandon Figueroa against Jessie Magdaleno for the WBC interim featherweight title. Magdaleno, at 32 years old, weighed in at 128.6 pounds, making him ineligible to win the title due to being over the featherweight limit. Meanwhile, the 27-year-old Figueroa, who weighed 125.4 pounds, is eligible to defend the title. This undercard fight is also expected to draw significant attention from fans.
