David Morrell’s team were taken aback by David Benavidez’s claims, who currently holds the WBC’s interim-title in super middleweight, denying a fight agreement between them. Morrell’s handlers were under the impression that a fall showdown with Benavidez was in the works. However, Benavidez refuted these assertions and shifted his sights onto former champion Jaime Munguia.

Luis DeCubas Sr., Morrell’s promoter, maintains that a deal for a Benavidez fight was finalized. DeCubas Sr. expressed confusion at Benavidez's sudden diversion towards Munguia, considering they had agreement from all parties for the Morrell-Benavidez fight. Recently, Munguia made a move up to the super middleweight and edged out Sergiy Derevyanchenko in a close decision, with his co-promoter indicating openness towards negotiations with Benavidez.

DeCubas Sr. dismissed the comparison between Munguia and Morrell, stating that they were operating on distinct boxing levels. He downplayed Munguia’s potential threat to Benavidez and emphasized Morrell's readiness to face and beat Benavidez.

A clash between Morrell and Benavidez at 168 pounds promises a high-stakes game. The winner would potentially challenge the undisputed world champion, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, making the bout even more crucial.
