Renowned boxer Roy Jones Jr. has recommended Errol Spence Jr. take at least two tune-up bouts before considering a rematch against the undefeated Terence Crawford at the junior middleweight level. Having suffered a ninth-round TKO defeat to Crawford on July 29th, Spence, with a record of 28-1, 22 KOs, is advised to adapt to the 154 lb category to better challenge Crawford, who stands at an impressive 40-0, 31 KOs. Crawford seems open to a delay, foreseeing better pay-per-view outcomes if Spence gains a few more wins.
Jones Jr. emphasized the importance of Spence’s overall health and readiness. He remarked, “As a coach, I would get Errol checked out to ensure everything is neurologically OK.” Jones Jr. also believes that for Spence to truly refine his technique, he should face formidable junior middleweights rather than easy matches that might unduly boost his confidence.
On the other hand, Crawford appears to be setting his sights on Jermell Charlo, the current undisputed junior middleweight champion. However, with Charlo potentially moving up to face Canelo Alvarez, Crawford’s plans might be disrupted. Concluding, Jones Jr. critiqued Crawford for not pushing the boundaries of his career and taking substantial risks to elevate his boxing legacy.
