Promoter Eddie Hearn is interested in arranging a unification bout in Australia between newly crowned IBF light welterweight champion Liam Paro and WBC champion Devin Haney.
A fight between Paro and Haney could generate substantial revenue in Australia, potentially filling a stadium and performing well on pay-per-view. Haney previously made significant earnings facing former unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. in Australia.
Paro's victory over Matias was achieved through a punch-and-grab strategy that neutralized Matias' offense. Although the fight was not particularly entertaining due to Paro's frequent holding, he secured the win with no rematch clause in place. Hearn mentioned that Matias might consider moving up to 147 pounds, as he appeared slightly drained at 140. Paro's tactic of holding and leaning on Matias wore him down, making it difficult for Matias to perform effectively.

While a potential Haney vs. Paro fight might not excite U.S. fans, it could be a major draw in Australia. American fans are more interested in seeing Haney face opponents like Ryan Garcia, Isaac Cruz, or Teofimo Lopez. However, if the Australian pay-per-view market makes the fight financially viable, it could be a favorable option for Haney. The primary concern for Haney would be dealing with Paro's holding tactics, though Haney is known for clinching as well.
Hearn did not clarify what would happen with Haney's overdue WBC mandatory fight against Sandor Martin. It's uncertain if Haney will give Martin a step-aside deal or if Hearn will request an exception from the WBC to allow Haney to fight Paro in a unification bout. Additionally, Paro has an IBF mandatory defense against Richardson Hitchins that he will need to address, further complicating the potential unification fight plans.
Despite these hurdles, Hearn is optimistic about the potential fight. Would you like to see such a bout? Drop your thoughts below.
