In a sudden turn of events, boxing promoter Eddie Hearn failed to secure the high-profile Arnold Barboza as the contender for Regis Prograis’ (28-1, 24 KOs) WBC Light Welterweight title defense. The boxing world now turns its attention to Danielito Zorrilla (17-1, 13 KOs), considered a second-tier fighter, who will meet Prograis in the ring on June 17th.
This twist in the tale came about after the originally scheduled contender, the undefeated Liam Paro, suffered an Achilles injury during training. Paro, recognized for his power-packed southpaw punch, was regarded by many as more talented and stronger than Josh Taylor, who controversially defeated Prograis in a 12-round majority decision in London in 2019. Amid the rising questions around Prograis’ choice to sign with Hearn instead of Top Rank, Prograis will now face Zorrilla, a comparatively obscure fighter.
Reflecting on the series of events, Prograis must be somewhat disappointed with this turn of events. Zorrilla, not currently ranked in the top 15 by any of the sanctioning bodies, hardly seems a fitting opponent for a champion of Prograis' stature. Some critics speculate whether Prograis’ career trajectory has been positively impacted by his association with Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing stable at all. In contrast, Zorrilla, who suffered a loss to Barboza last July, appears to be more motivated and confident. “I am ready to be a world champion,” Zorrilla asserts, thankful for the opportunity Prograis has offered him. Despite his previous loss, Zorrilla seems convinced of his ability to claim victory over Prograis on June 17th.
Since his recent association with Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing company, the 34-year-old Prograis had high hopes of entering the ring against renowned fighters. But, now faced with Zorrilla, a boxer already bested by Barboza and lacking notable victories, some doubts hover over the value of the multi-fight deal. Assuming Prograis triumphs against Zorrilla, the boxing world will keenly observe who Hearn lines up next for his title defense. If it’s another less-known fighter, there’s a possibility Prograis’ career may stagnate under Hearn’s management, which could ultimately lead to him not re-signing.
