Promoter Eddie Hearn is geared up to arrange a middleweight clash between Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr., despite recent setbacks for Benn. Initially set to face-off last October in a major pay-per-view event, the bout was derailed after Benn’s positive test for a prohibited substance.
Discussing this potential bout, Hearn relayed his message to Eubank’s promoter, Kalle Sauerland, highlighting the magnitude of an Eubank-Benn showdown. “If Eubank had showcased a commendable fight, even in defeat, the Benn fight’s appeal would remain undiminished. And with his win, the fight’s allure is unprecedented,” Hearn mentioned to IFL TV.
Nonetheless, Benn’s ongoing legal battle with the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) and UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) poses challenges. While Benn’s suspension got uplifted by the National Anti-Doping Panel recently, both BBBofC and UKAD contested this decision.
However, Hearn shared potential plans for Benn's interim bout in September, a part of the Matchroom event in Orlando. He clarified, “The BBBofC remains open to Benn’s Orlando fight, as he’s not under any active suspension. Ideally, he should have a preparatory bout ahead of the anticipated Eubank face-off, given his inactivity spanning over 18 months.”
Hearn concluded, emphasizing the decision will likely come this week, “We’re pondering if Benn should shake off his hiatus with a light match, setting the stage for a career-defining bout against Eubank.”
