Edgar Berlanga (20-0, 16 KOs), a super middleweight contender who recently signed with Eddie Hearn, will fight in June against a top 15 opponent, maybe someone who Canelo Alvarez has already faced, according to a statement made by Hearn.
Hearn's statement of Berlanga taking on a former Canelo foe eliminates all but one opponent for his upcoming bout in June 2023: Daniel Jacobs (37-4, 30 KOs). Jacobs has fought just twice since losing to Canelo in 2018 and, regrettably, many boxing fans consider him to be a completely out-of-shape boxer who has looked terrible since 2019.
Jacobs hasn't been as aggressive as he once was and has appeared uninspired, as if he's lost the spark he once had. This might be because of the sizable bag that Jacobs received for the Canelo fight or the punishment he received in that contest.
It's also of course probable that Jacobs seeming impoverished could be the whole goal. In other words, he poses no threat to defeat the extremely defenseless Berlanga and derail the lucrative matchup between Canelo and him the next year.
The 36-year-old former IBF/WBA middleweight champion Jacobs is a boxer who Berlanga has already highlighted as a possible contender for him to establish himself and obtain a fight against Canelo Alvarez.
