Anthony Joshua's (24-3, 22 KOs) new trainer, Derrick James, has been officially named for his bout against Jermaine Franklin (21-1, 14 KOs) on April 1.
Before his bout with Franklin in April at the O2 Arena in London, James has just two months to make swift adjustments to Joshua's strategy, and that might not be enough. If James intends to have Joshua fight in his old seek-and-destroy fashion, which has been successful for him throughout his career, it will be a straightforward adjustment. Joshua had the most success in that style both as a professional and an amateur, and James is adept at passing it on.
Errol Spence Jr. and Jermell Charlo, two world champions who had notable victories in 2022 are both trained by James, who is headquartered in Texas. Obviously, Joshua is depending on Derrick to help him achieve the same kind of success as those two champions.
Ideally, Joshua will give Derrick three fights to make the necessary modifications to his style before deciding whether or not to keep him.
Unfortunately, Joshua appears desperate at this point in his career and appears to blame his trainers for the string of failures.
