Subriel Matias is aiming for a standout performance tonight in his homecoming fight in Puerto Rico. The IBF junior welterweight champion will defend his title against the unbeaten Australian Liam Paro on the Matchroom card at the Coliseo Juan Aubin Cruz Abreu in Manati.
Matias, 32, has impressively stopped all 20 of his opponents and avenged his sole loss to Petros Ananyan in 2020. Despite his fearsome reputation, ProBox TV’s Chris Algieri believes Matias needs to face higher-caliber opponents to truly establish his dominance at 140 pounds.
“In terms of him being the best at 140, he’s got to fight more high-class guys. This Liam Paro fight is going to be really eye-opening because I think Liam is world-class. I don’t think he’s elite yet, but a win here could elevate him. Matias needs to consistently compete against world-class, elite-level fighters before he can be crowned the king of the division. There are many talented world champions at 140, and I need to see him compete against them.”

Liam Paro, a southpaw managed by Brian Peters, has gained attention with a swift victory over Brock Jarvis and a stoppage of Montana Love last December. However, Paulie Malignaggi believes Paro faces a formidable challenge in Matias, whom he holds in high regard.
“I think this guy is very, very dangerous and doesn’t get enough respect.”
Malignaggi sees this fight not just as a homecoming for Matias but as a significant test. He added:
“Paro’s solid, but he’s always going to be a little bit short of a world championship. While I hope for a competitive fight, I think Matias runs through him.”
