‘King’ Callum Walsh, the undefeated champion hailing from Cork, Ireland, is set to make the first defense of his WBC US Silver super welterweight Title. The bout has undergone a last-minute opponent change, with Walsh now facing ‘El Pitbull’ Juan Jose Velasco of Buenos Aires, Argentina. This showdown will take place on Saturday, August 26 at the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles, CA, and will be globally broadcast on UFC Fight Pass.
Walsh’s original adversary, Livan Navarro, had to withdraw due to a training injury. Velasco, with his commendable record, has faced various world champions and notable contenders, such as Regis Prograis and Mario Berrios. After a narrow split decision loss to Flavius Blea earlier in May 2023, the Argentinian is eager to make a comeback by challenging Walsh.
Promoter Tom Loeffler voiced his perspective on the change, stating, “While it was unfortunate that Livan Navarro was injured, Juan Jose Velasco presents another very tough challenge for Callum Walsh.” He also teased more exciting fight announcements for the August 26 event, hinting at a thrilling line-up for fans.
Walsh, a 22-year-old southpaw trained by the iconic Freddie Roach, had previously showcased his prowess by stopping Carson Jones in the fourth round this past June. This victory, witnessed by a full house at the Commerce Casino, had earned him the WBC US Silver super welterweight title.
