In a recent announcement on TV Azteca, Canelo Alvarez clarified the landscape for his upcoming fight on May 4 in Las Vegas, indirectly dismissing Jaime Munguia as a potential opponent. This revelation came alongside the news of renewing his broadcast partnership in Mexico, emphasizing that his next challenger would be an American, not a fellow Mexican, thus sidelining Munguia from the running for the much-anticipated bout.

This update narrows down the speculation to Jermall Charlo, seen as the leading candidate to challenge Alvarez for his IBF, WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titles. Despite fan enthusiasm for a match-up against David Benavidez, a Mexican American born in Phoenix, Alvarez’s criteria point towards Charlo. Charlo’s selection could stir controversy among boxing enthusiasts due to his recent inactivity and being the twin brother of Jermell Charlo, whom Alvarez decisively defeated last September.

Jermall Charlo’s comeback fight last November against Jose Benavidez Jr. marked the end of a 29-month hiatus, partly due to mental health challenges. Despite coming in overweight for the bout, Charlo secured a victory, signaling his readiness for more significant challenges, possibly setting the stage for a showdown with Alvarez.

Meanwhile, Munguia’s recent triumph over John Ryder had amplified calls for a face-off with Alvarez, especially given Ryder’s resilient performance against Alvarez in their previous encounter. However, Alvarez’s latest statements have shifted the focus towards an all-American opponent for the Cinco de Mayo weekend showcase.
