Another ProBox event took place yesterday in Mexico City, where in the main event 2 bantamweights Brayan Rivera (11-4, 9 KOs) and Alejandro Gonzalez (13-5-2, 7 KOs) squared off in a 10-round bout.
Although Brayan Rivera was the betting favorite, Alejandro Gonzalez displayed better precision in his second ProBox TV showcase. Early on, Gonzalez outworked Rivera, however in the second round, a collision of heads caused a cut to appear in the center of Rivera's forehead. Gonzalez took advantage of his seeming lack of stability to add a few more rounds to the scoreboard.
All in all, Gonzalez won by unanimous decision, and the official scores were 97-93, 98-92, 96-92. He put in a strong performance, demonstrating why it was wise to bring him back after he lost by decision at ProBox's Cancun event in September 2022.
In the co-main event, Ivan Garcia (9-2-1, 6 KOs) was being shoved down on the back of his head in the second round when Francisco Araujo (9-2, 6 KOs) unintentionally delivered a low shot on him.
Araujo oversold a grazing slash across the back of his head in the fourth round in dramatic fashion. The commentary crew believed it was a facile justification for Araujo to leave a bout where he was having trouble. Paulie Malignaggi in particular dissected what he considered to be Araujo's lackluster acting performance in minute visual detail over several replays.
After the fight was declared over, Araujo somehow got to his feet and appeared to be able to move around without any problems. Following a lengthy debate at ringside, Garcia was declared the winner via TKO.
In the undercard, Leyver Lopez (3-4-1, 1 KOs) was defeated by unbeaten super lightweight Jesus Mauricio Estrada (8-0, 5 KOs) in round five. Lopez was knocked out by a body hook from Estrada.
