Times change, and according to Edgar Berlanga, so does the status of Canelo Alvarez at the top of boxing’s pound-for-pound lists. Berlanga, in a recent interview with BoxingScene.com, suggested that Alvarez is no longer in his prime. “I think he’s declining,” Berlanga opined. “I don’t think he’s at where he was before.” His assessment follows Alvarez’s recent performances, including a difficult bout against Dmitry Bivol and a lackluster showing against John Ryder.
While Berlanga may seem critical, it’s largely due to his keen interest in challenging Alvarez himself. The 26-year-old, who remains undefeated, is unimpressed with Alvarez’s recent showings, yet maintains a vigil on his potential opponent's career trajectory. As Berlanga readies himself for an upcoming face-off against journeyman Jason Quigley on June 24th at the Hulu Theater in New York’s Madison Square Garden, he maintains optimism that a showdown with Alvarez may be closer than many believe.
Although Berlanga acknowledges Alvarez’s decline, he is quick to recognize the skill and tenacity that still make the veteran a formidable opponent. Behind the scenes, Berlanga's appraisal of Alvarez is a mix of critique and respect, even if he thinks the champion’s best days might be behind him. Despite his observations, Berlanga remains wary, asserting, “He’s still a beast man. You can’t sleep on that guy.”
