Previously, in an impressive display, interim super middleweight champion David Benavidez demonstrated his status as the second-best fighter in the division (behind champion Canelo Alvarez) by decisively defeating Caleb Plant through a unanimous decision on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Benavidez dominated Plant in the final six rounds, securing victory with scores of 115-113, 116-112, and 117-111. Each judge awarded Benavidez every round from the sixth through the 12th.

After the fight, Benavidez called out Alvarez, saying he has “a lot of respect for Canelo Alvarez, but he has to give me that shot now. That's what everyone wants to see. Let's make it happen.

“I don't think Canelo is trying to avoid me. I just feel like he has a lot of options. But now the fans are calling for this fight, the legends are calling for this fight, so let's make it happen.”

Alvarez is scheduled to face John Ryder in May of 2022 and is expected to have a rematch with Dmitry Bivol in September.
