Jaime Munguia’s hope of quickly moving past his disputed win over Bruno Surace has hit a major snag. The 28-year-old Mexican contender’s “B” sample has matched the “A,” confirming the presence of exogenous testosterone from testing tied to his May 4 decision in Riyadh. With both vials showing the same adverse finding, the matter now passes to the British Boxing Board of Control, which oversaw the card and will decide whether the result is flipped to a no-contest, plus any fine or suspension.

Team Munguia were on hand June 10 in Salt Lake City when the sealed bottle was opened and sent through analysis. In a statement they stressed the fighter’s “full commitment to transparency,” noting they have submitted every supplement he used to a WADA-accredited lab to hunt for possible contamination. “I have spent my entire career doing things the right way,” Munguia said. “We’re going to prove we never disrespected the sport.”

The ruling carries high-stakes fallout. Munguia avenged his December knockout loss to Surace that night and sits near title contention at 168 lbs under new trainer Eddy Reynoso. Any retroactive no-contest would erase the rebound, while a ban could derail plans for a late-2025 return to big-fight mix.

For now the BBBofC will review the lab data, Munguia’s supplement list and any expert testimony before issuing a verdict. Until then, the former 154-lb titlist remains under provisional investigation.
