Eddie Hearn has sparked a debate in the boxing community by suggesting that Canelo Alvarez should face David Benavidez next, describing it as the fight “good for the sport.” This statement comes amidst the anticipation and desire of boxing fans for a clash between Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) and Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs). However, Hearn believes that Canelo might instead opt for Jaime Munguia in May 2024, provided Munguia emerges victorious against John Ryder in January.
Benavidez has been relentless in pursuing a fight with Canelo, but Hearn fears this approach could deter Canelo from giving Benavidez the opportunity. Hearn speculates that other boxers might adopt Benavidez’s aggressive tactics to secure fights, which could disrupt the boxing ecosystem. Additionally, Hearn doubts that a fight between Canelo and Jermall Charlo will materialize, despite Charlo’s impressive recent victory over Jose Benavidez Jr.
To increase his chances of facing Canelo, Benavidez is advised to take risky fights in 2024. This move could bolster his reputation and make him a more appealing opponent for Canelo. Hearn’s list of potential opponents for Benavidez includes Jaime Opetaia, Dmitry Bivol, David Morrell Jr., and Artur Beterbiev. These fights would not only increase Benavidez’s standing but also enhance his case for a bout with Canelo.
Regarding Munguia, Hearn notes his lack of popularity among hardcore boxing fans in the U.S., and his relative obscurity among casual fans, likening him to John Ryder in terms of notoriety. This match-up with Canelo may not generate the excitement and demand that a fight with Benavidez would. Terence Crawford is also mentioned as a potential opponent for Canelo, but Hearn is skeptical about the feasibility of this matchup.
