Australian boxing sensation Alex Winwood (4-0, 2 KOs) will get the chance to extend his record when he challenges WBA strawweight champion Thammanoon Niyomtrong, also known as Knockout CP Freshmart (24-0, 9 KOs) at HBF Stadium in Perth, Australia.
The bout, which will be broadcast live on local streaming service 7plus, represents a rare opportunity for Winwood to fight for a world title on home soil.
"It’s the dream come true, obviously. I’ve been quite outspoken about winning a world title very fast, and to finally have the opportunity is exactly what we’ve been after."
Niyomtrong, a veteran of the sport and a former Muay Thai fighter, has dominated the 105-pound division for nearly a decade. The 33-year-old Thai boxer won the interim WBA title just two years into his professional career and was promoted to full champion in 2016. However, his inactivity over the past two years, coupled with his advancing age, has given Winwood confidence that he can dethrone the long-reigning champion.
Despite Niyomtrong's vast experience, Winwood remains undeterred.
"He’s a very tough Thai, as they all are. But I think age might be getting to him a bit. He’s also been on the sidelines for two years, so I think that everything might just swing in my favor a bit more. Speed might outdo power."
