Sam Gilley (17-1, 8 KOs) will make his Queensberry debut at York Hall, defending his Commonwealth super welterweight title against Jack McGann (10-1-1, 7 KOs).
Originally, Gilley was preparing for a rematch with Louis Greene, but with Greene forced to withdraw due to injury, McGann stepped in for the unexpected opportunity.
Gilley, 30, secured the Commonwealth belt in a grueling 12-round battle against Greene last October but hasn’t fought since. Having recently signed with Queensberry Promotions, Gilley was looking forward to a shot at the British title. However, with this late change of opponent, he will have to wait a bit longer for his chance at the prestigious Lonsdale Belt.
For McGann, this is a major opportunity. He was originally scheduled to face Ryan Maycock in a six-round contest but jumped at the chance to headline against Gilley. McGann, 31, is looking to get his career back on track after a tough loss to Greene earlier this year, where he was stopped in the first round on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s knockout win over Francis Ngannou in Riyadh.
The undercard is also stacked with talent. Royston Barney-Smith (11-0, 5 KOs) will fight in an eight-rounder after his recent WBO Youth title win, while the unbeaten Courtney Bennett (5-0, 2 KOs) takes on Nick Webb (17-3, 13 KOs) for the vacant Southern Area heavyweight title. US super middleweight Abel Gonzalez (7-0, 5 KOs) makes his Queensberry debut, alongside rising stars Umar Khan (10-0, 1 KOs) and Tommy Fletcher (8-0, 6 KOs).
